The Deal

At the start of each round, 13 cards are dealt to each of the four players. Cards are dealt face-down and players pick up their hand before making any declarations. The dealer rotates clockwise after each round.

Making Your Call

Before the first card is played, each player must declare a number between 1 and 13 — this is your "call," representing how many tricks you commit to winning. You cannot call zero. A conservative call of 2 or 3 is safe; a bold call of 8+ demands a strong hand and sharp execution.

Playing Tricks

The player to the left of the dealer leads the first trick by placing a card face-up. Each subsequent player must follow suit if they can. If you cannot follow suit, you may play any card — including a spade trump. The highest card of the led suit wins the trick, unless a spade has been played, in which case the highest spade wins.

Trump Suit – Spades

Spades are the permanent trump suit in Callbreak. Any spade beats any non-spade card regardless of rank. Leading with a spade is only allowed if you have no cards in the led suit, or once spades have been "broken" by a previous play. Managing your spade holdings is the single most important skill in the game.

Scoring

If you meet or exceed your call, you score points equal to your call number, plus 0.1 points per extra trick won above your call. If you fail to meet your call, you lose points equal to your call. After a set number of rounds (typically 5), the player with the highest total score wins the prize pool.
